Recently, Fes-Saïs Airport witnessed protests from car rental agency owners, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the current situation in the airport’s parking lots. They noticed a market monopoly and unfair competition from individuals who park their private cars in spots designated for rental cars, even displaying logos of car rental agencies. This creates chaos and contributes to tarnishing the airport’s image.
Car rental agency owners pointed out that this phenomenon contradicts the regulations in place for the sector, as the cars parked in public spaces are not subject to the relevant laws, and their owners do not pay any fees for using these public areas. They argue that this behavior harms local car rental agencies operating within the legal framework and creates chaos at the airport, especially with the country’s preparations to host major sporting events like the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
In turn, Jalal, the vice president of the Fes Car Rental Agencies Association, confirmed that the association has been monitoring this issue continuously for a year and a half. Several meetings were held with relevant authorities, such as the Road Transport Department in Fes. He added that the head of the Road Transport Department confirmed that it is the right of anyone to park their car in designated spots, but the situation is still marred by a lot of chaos.
He mentioned that they had contacted the public prosecutor to verify the legality of these practices, and the authorities confirmed that there is nothing preventing people from parking in public spaces. However, they called for local authorities and the airport management to intervene and organize the situation. Jalal emphasized that the current situation harms the airport’s reputation and negatively impacts the travelers’ experience, especially with the approaching global sporting events.
