Chisinau: The Republic of Moldova announced its full and absolute support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco for a definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, considering it the “most serious and credible basis” for resolving this long-standing conflict, in its capital Chisinau on Tuesday.
This supportive stance was declared in a joint statement issued following significant discussions between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, who is currently on a working visit to Chisinau.
In the joint statement, the Republic of Moldova expressed its “full support for the sincere and continuous efforts” made by Morocco to find a final solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, ensuring the stability and prosperity of the region.
During the meeting, the Moldovan Foreign Minister also reiterated his country’s firm support for the political process led by the United Nations aimed at achieving a just, practical, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties involved in the dispute.
The two ministers also agreed on the centrality and exclusive role of the United Nations in the political process concerning the Sahara, and reaffirmed their full support for Security Council Resolution 2756 (2024), which clearly emphasizes the pivotal role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, practical, and lasting agreement, and reaching a political solution based on consensus among all parties.
Furthermore, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Moldova affirmed in their joint statement their strong support for the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Sahara and his valuable efforts aimed at advancing the political process based on the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations.
Both parties also reiterated their full support for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), as stated in the joint statement that concluded these important discussions.
