Abdelatif Jouahri, the Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib, announced in a press conference held after the meeting of the Bank’s Board on Tuesday that a special committee has been formed within the institution to develop the digital dirham project, noting that the project is making significant progress.
Jouahri explained that Bank Al-Maghrib has prepared a special bill regarding digital currencies, which has been sent to the Ministry of Finance for review. He also mentioned that the ministry has established its own special committee to work on the project, while a team within Bank Al-Maghrib continues to develop the digital dirham.
The Governor emphasized that the digital dirham project has reached advanced stages and has become a priority for the institution after the completion of the cryptocurrency law draft. Despite this significant development, Jouahri indicated that it is still too early to assess the impact of the digital dirham on monetary policy at this stage.
Jouahri clarified that the primary goal of the project is to enhance the value of the Moroccan currency and support the transition from traditional cash transactions to digital payments, as part of the development of the national financial system.
