The Regional Directorate of Islamic Affairs in Khénifra has announced a decision to ban money collection inside mosques for any reason, as part of efforts to maintain order and transparency in financial operations related to mosques.
While the directive excludes associations authorized to build mosques by local authorities, the decision comes at a time when many mosques across the country, especially during Ramadan, experience the phenomenon of collecting money before Taraweeh prayers to support imams and mosque staff.
Some individuals in this context circulate among the worshipers to collect donations in bags, without anyone knowing the total amount collected or the entity responsible for managing the funds, raising concerns about transparency and oversight of these operations.
In related news, the government council recently approved a draft decree concerning the regulation of public donation collection and the distribution of charitable assistance. The draft aims to implement the provisions of Law No. 18.18, which regulates public donations and the distribution of charitable aid, issued under Royal Decree No. 1.22.79 on December 13, 2022.
The draft includes several measures to establish the licensing process for donation collection, clarify how charitable aid is distributed, and set up oversight mechanisms to ensure transparency and proper management. Additionally, the decree outlines procedures for auditing accounts related to the collected funds, ensuring that donations are not misused.
