Fes-Meknes Region Registers 39 Bribery Cases in the Public Prosecution’s 2023 Report

The 2023 annual report by the Public Prosecution highlighted that the anti-bribery hotline, launched on May 14, 2018, received a total of 77,507 calls by the end of December 2023. These calls varied, including reports of bribery cases before they occurred, as well as complaints related to other forms of financial corruption such as abuse of power, betrayal, and grievances concerning judicial matters or governmental institutions.

The report emphasized that this mechanism has significantly contributed to achieving tangible results, with a total of 299 cases being intercepted, including 56 cases discovered during 2023 alone.

Marrakech-Safi led the list with 65 cases, followed by Casablanca-Settat with 53 cases. Rabat-Salé-Kénitra ranked third with 48 cases, while Fes-Meknes came in fourth with 39 cases.

The Souss-Massa region recorded 35 cases, while Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima registered 20 cases. The Beni Mellal-Khenifra region had 16 cases, the Eastern region recorded 13, Drâa-Tafilalet reported 8, and finally, Guelmim-Oued Noun had only two cases.

The report noted that the anti-bribery hotline is part of the national strategy for combating corruption, which aims to enhance transparency and encourage citizens to report such crimes. It also seeks to involve citizens in the fight against financial corruption and to promote cooperation in this area.

To facilitate communication with the public, a new mobile application has been developed, enabling calls to be received outside of official working hours. The app allows citizens to report bribery and corruption cases in Arabic, Amazigh, and French, with calls automatically recorded for later processing. Investigations are then initiated by contacting the relevant parties and referring them to the Public Prosecution for legal action.
