Widespread Debate Surrounds Proposal to Postpone the Third Mid-Term Break in Morocco

A request submitted by Abdellah Bouanou, head of the Justice and Development Party’s parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, has sparked widespread debate within Morocco’s educational community. The proposal calls for extending the third mid-term break by one week to coincide with the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Bouanou argues that this delay would allow students and educational staff to celebrate Eid al-Fitr under better conditions. He points out that the current gap between the two holidays is only one week, making the extension necessary to ease the burden on families and students, especially those who travel to spend the holiday with their relatives.

Some social media users, particularly those working in the education sector in mountainous and rural areas, welcomed the proposal. However, others have expressed their opposition, citing pre-booked travel plans and commitments based on the ministry’s annual holiday schedule.

Noureddine Akouri, president of the Federation of Parents’ Associations in Morocco, voiced his rejection of the proposal, stating that many families oppose it for various reasons. Meanwhile, union sources confirmed that the Ministry of Education is against any changes to the annual holiday schedule.
