Spain Seeks Moroccan Authorities’ Assistance to Uncover the Use of an Illegal Tunnel Linking Occupied Ceuta to Morocco for Drug Trafficking + (Images)

Spanish authorities continue to investigate the discovery of an illegal tunnel linking the occupied city of Ceuta to Morocco, suspected of being used for drug trafficking. Civil Guard officers have returned to the “Trajal” industrial area to resume inspections and uncover details about this tunnel, which has raised questions regarding its involvement in criminal activities.

According to Spanish news agency “Europa Press,” the Internal Affairs Department and the Underground Identification Unit, deployed since Monday, are intensifying their investigations. Among the measures taken, Spanish authorities called in fire teams on Tuesday morning to drain accumulated water in the warehouse where the tunnel was discovered, following recent rains.

As part of the investigations, Judge María Tarudón from Spain’s National Court sent a judicial request to Moroccan authorities last week, seeking cooperation in the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Royal Gendarmerie forces were present at the Moroccan border on the same day, although no official coordination between Spanish and Moroccan authorities has been confirmed.

Investigations Lead to Arrests

After the discovery of the tunnel, Spanish authorities closed its entrance as part of the “Hades” security operation, which resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including two Civil Guard officers and a deputy from Ceuta’s City Council, Mohamed Ali Darras, from the MDyC party. The arrested individuals face charges related to membership in a criminal organization, bribery, and public health crimes.

Coordination Between Moroccan and Spanish Authorities

For its part, Moroccan authorities have initiated intensive investigations in the “stricken” industrial area of Ceuta, near the border with the city of Fnideq. According to media reports, security and judicial officials have been spotted in the area, where it is suspected that this location could be the exit point of the tunnel crossing into Morocco. This was accompanied by widespread security measures, including the presence of Royal Gendarmerie, national police, and border guards, in an effort to uncover the section of the tunnel that extends into Moroccan territory.

Raids and Drug Seizures

In related developments, Spanish police carried out a series of raids on warehouses near the “Trajal” border crossing, resulting in the arrest of five individuals suspected of being involved in an international drug trafficking network. During the raids, 700 kilograms of hashish were seized, and the detainees were placed under provisional detention for further investigation.

Details of the Discovered Tunnel

On another note, the newspaper “Europa Sur” reported that the secret tunnel extends 12 meters underground and spans 50 meters in length. It begins in a warehouse in the “stricken” industrial area in occupied Ceuta and penetrates the border into Morocco. Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue to coordinate efforts to uncover further details about this tunnel and its implications for drug trafficking operations.

Investigations continue under the security coordination between Spanish and Moroccan authorities, aiming to uncover all the threads of this complex case that threatens regional security and reveals the sophisticated methods used by drug cartels.
