Fes Celebrates First Anniversary of Joining UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities

The city of Fes will celebrate, on March 5, the first anniversary of its membership in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) under the theme “Together for Lifelong Learning.”

This celebration is organized by the Municipality of Fes in partnership with the UNESCO Regional Office in Morocco-Rabat, the Moroccan National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture in Rabat, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fes, and Euromed University in Fes. The event will serve as an opportunity to exchange best practices and experiences among learning cities at both national and international levels.

The celebration will also feature the screening of a film highlighting the achievements and prospects of lifelong learning, education, and training for various stakeholders involved in teaching and learning.

According to a statement from the organizers, the program of this event, also organized in partnership with the Regional Academy of Education and Training in the Fes-Meknes region, the Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of National Education, the Regional Directorate of Handicrafts, the Regional Directorate of the Office of Vocational Training and Labor Promotion in Fes-Meknes, the Regional Directorate of the National Agency for the Fight against Illiteracy, and the Regional Coordination of National Mutual Aid, includes presentations on “African Learning Cities: Key Perspectives and Initiatives for 2025,” as well as discussions on “The Alliance of National Commissions and Learning Cities in Africa.”

The statement noted that Fes’s membership in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities is the culmination of the city’s ongoing initiatives to make education and learning a top priority, as a fundamental pillar of sustainable and inclusive development, thereby enhancing its status as a pioneering city in lifelong learning on a global scale.

The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to making Fes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, a hub of creativity and learning for all, emphasizing that the city will meet the requirements of this recognition by closely collaborating to promote inclusive learning and achieve the goals of learning cities in line with UNESCO’s 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

The statement added that Fes’s partners in the learning city initiative will continue to adopt the best regional and global practices and promote a culture of lifelong learning, ensuring that education is not limited to schools but becomes a deeply rooted reality in people’s lives.

The organizers hope that the city’s membership will add significant value to the Learning Cities Network, contributing through its programs and initiatives to strengthen cooperation with other member cities of the network.

It is worth noting that the cities of Agadir, Fes, and Essaouira have joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in recognition of their efforts to make lifelong learning a tangible reality for all at the local level.

These three cities have joined other Moroccan cities that are members of the network, namely Marrakech, Ifrane, Chefchaouen, and Benguerir.
