Teachers’ Union Warns of Deteriorating Conditions in Khénifra Dormitories: “Meat is Just a Rumor… and Hunger Prevails in Ramadan”

The National Federation of Education (FNE) – Democratic Orientation has raised concerns over the worsening conditions in school dormitories in Khénifra, particularly in the Mrirt region, where students face severe food shortages during Ramadan due to the lack of oversight on meal quality.

In an official statement, the union revealed that students are informed about the inclusion of red meat in their weekly meals, yet they never actually see it, raising serious concerns about transparency in food management. The FNE has called for regular inspection committees to ensure balanced meals that meet health standards and nutritional needs.

Additionally, the statement highlighted the struggles of kitchen workers, many of whom are not registered with the National Social Security Fund (CNSS). These workers earn no more than 1,500 MAD per month despite working over 10 hours daily, while cleaning staff earn as little as 1,000 MAD without paid holidays or overtime compensation. The union condemned the lack of response from social security authorities, describing it as a reinforcement of labor precarity in educational institutions.

The report also pointed to a severe shortage of cleaning supplies in many schools, worsening hygiene issues, especially given the poor dietary conditions that students endure in dormitories.

In response, the FNE urged authorities to standardize school hours for primary education during Ramadan by reducing the start and end times by 30 minutes, aligning with ministerial directives.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of students and workers, stressing that improving living and food conditions in dormitories, as well as securing workers’ rights, is an urgent priority. The FNE called on relevant authorities to take immediate action to address these issues.
