Over the next few days, the Islamic world is awaiting the start of the holy month of Ramadan, as its crescent moon will be observed on Friday evening, 29 Shaaban 1446 AH, corresponding to February 28, 2025 AD, to determine the first days of the holy month.
The methods of determining the entry of Ramadan vary among Islamic countries, as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and most Islamic countries rely on the legitimate vision with the naked eye on the last day of the month of Shaaban, while other countries resort to astronomical calculations to determine the date of the beginning of the fast.
In this context, the International Astronomical Center explained in a statement that the crescent moon investigation will take place on Friday, noting that it is possible to see it using a telescope from Western Asia, most of Africa and southern Europe, while it will be possible with the naked eye in large areas of the Americas.
The center added that based on these astronomical calculations, and due to the conjunction occurring before sunset and the moon setting after sunset throughout the Islamic world, the majority of Islamic countries are expected to declare Saturday, March 1, 2025, the first day of Ramadan.
Interestingly, if this prediction comes true, there will be a rare phenomenon, as the first day of the lunar month will coincide with the first day of the Gregorian month, which has only happened in a few cases throughout history.
