Bourita Criticizes Separatist European Parliamentarians: Morocco Is Open but Its Sovereignty Is a Red Line

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita affirmed on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, that the recent refusal to allow three pro-Polisario European parliamentarians to enter Laayoune was in strict accordance with Moroccan laws governing entry into the country. He emphasized that Morocco’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and cannot be undermined.

Bourita clarified that Morocco, particularly its southern regions, remains open to visitors and officials. Over the years, millions of tourists, business leaders, and international representatives have been welcomed, provided they adhere to legal entry requirements. He stressed that all visits—whether official or private—must comply with established regulations that uphold Morocco’s sovereignty, regardless of whether the visitors are parliamentarians, government officials, or foreign delegations.

The minister reiterated that Morocco welcomes all visitors who respect its laws and procedures but firmly rejects any attempts to challenge its territorial integrity. He explained that entry into the country, whether for official or personal reasons, follows clear legal protocols, as is the case worldwide.

Regarding the European parliamentarians in question, Bourita stated that Moroccan authorities acted in accordance with national regulations, rejecting any attempts to impose external agendas in violation of the law. He asserted that those who respect Morocco’s sovereignty are welcome, while those who seek to undermine it will face a strong and law-abiding state.

He also pointed out that certain parties persist in attempting to create crises to disrupt the development trajectory of Morocco’s southern provinces. However, he dismissed these efforts as futile, affirming that Morocco remains steadfast in strengthening its sovereignty and international standing.

Bourita highlighted that, in the same week, Laayoune hosted an official visit from the President of the French Senate along with several business leaders and international officials. This, he noted, is a testament to the openness of Morocco’s southern regions and their role as hubs for global events and cooperation.

Concluding his statement, Bourita underscored that Morocco applies its laws without exception, just like any sovereign nation. He emphasized that mutual respect is the foundation of international relations and made it clear that Morocco will not allow any external party to bypass its laws or push agendas that threaten its territorial integrity.
