Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas held a press conference on the evening of Thursday, February 6, 2025, following the weekly government council meeting. He reviewed the latest developments and key decisions made during the session.
At the outset, Baitas addressed the measles outbreak and the government’s measures to contain it. He stated that the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has implemented a multi-pronged strategy to strengthen vaccination campaigns and recover missed immunizations. This initiative has enabled the verification of the vaccination status of over 8.88 million children under 18. He further emphasized that the ministry has enhanced epidemiological surveillance, intensified health monitoring efforts, deployed rapid response teams to the most affected areas, and ensured the availability of medicines and medical supplies for urgent case management.
Regarding the current agricultural season, Baitas reported that the government council reviewed a presentation by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests on the state of the 2024-2025 farming season. Due to below-average rainfall compared to the national 30-year average, several support measures have been introduced for farmers. These include the provision and subsidization of approximately 1.3 million quintals of selected cereal seeds, the availability of around 200,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizers, and a comprehensive program to support livestock production, including the distribution of subsidized feed and enhanced veterinary care to safeguard the national herd.
Baitas also announced that the government council approved a draft decree presented by Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, concerning the establishment of protection perimeters around water collection facilities for public supply. This decree aims to define criteria for designating direct and indirect protection zones around springs, wells, and dams and to regulate activities within these areas in accordance with water legislation.
Additionally, the council approved another draft decree outlining the conditions and procedures for defining conservation and restricted areas and granting permits and concessions within them. This measure, aligned with Law No. 36.15 on water management, seeks to ensure the sustainable governance of water resources based on well-defined criteria.
Baitas concluded the press conference by reaffirming the government’s commitment to implementing policies that enhance public health, economic stability, and social well-being. He underscored the importance of swiftly responding to emerging challenges in the health, agricultural, and environmental sectors to ensure sustainable development and meet citizens’ needs.
