PJD Team in Fes Municipality Condemns Deterioration of Urban Transport, Sanitation, and Local Services, Holding Mayor and Majority Responsible

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) team in the Fes Municipal Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming council session scheduled for Thursday, February 6, 2025. During this meeting, members discussed key local issues, focusing on the positive momentum in road development projects overseen by “Fes Development Company” under the supervision of the Wilaya of the Fes-Meknes region and the Ministry of the Interior, as part of the city’s preparations for major sports events like the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

According to the statement received by the newspaper, the team expressed deep concern over the significant decline in local services, which are a fundamental responsibility of municipal councils. Members highlighted delays in processing requests for water and electricity connections and the slow response to citizens’ complaints, especially those related to local taxes and fees.

The team also criticized the severe deterioration in urban transport services, emphasizing that Fes residents are suffering due to the near-collapse of public transport services caused by the failure to meet workers’ rights in the sector. They accused the municipal council’s president and his fragile majority of failing to find effective solutions, leaving the city waiting for the Ministry of the Interior’s intervention in the coming months.

Regarding waste management, the PJD team condemned the mayor’s handling of the company responsible for sanitation services. Instead of prioritizing service quality improvements, the mayor allegedly distributed worker quotas among his political allies, which the PJD team labeled as political exploitation harming service efficiency. They called for transparency, equal job opportunities, and fair treatment for all residents.

As for the February 2025 council session agenda, the team reviewed and finalized their positions, which they will officially announce during the session.

The team made the following statements to the public:

  • Appreciation for road projects: Commending the Wilaya’s efforts in street renovations, which will contribute to the city’s economic growth.
  • Solidarity with transport workers: Expressing support for urban transport employees and demanding their financial rights be secured.
  • Holding the mayor accountable: Blaming the council’s president and majority for the urban transport crisis.
  • Warning against political exploitation: Denouncing the politicization of waste management services, stressing that it harms service quality.
  • Criticism of local governance: Arguing that the municipal administration’s failures reflect a broader public governance crisis caused by incompetence and lack of credibility in the ruling coalition’s policies.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that political work must serve citizens rather than personal interests, to maintain the credibility of public service.
