The city of Fes is making significant strides in implementing the “Cities Without Slums” program, aimed at enhancing the urban environment and providing dignified living conditions for residents affected by slum housing.
As part of this initiative, several informal settlements, including those in the Derb Al-Mashmash area, have been cleared in a comprehensive plan to relocate residents to appropriate housing that meets health and social standards.
In an interview with Fes News, a resident of Derb Al-Mashmash expressed his satisfaction with the local authorities’ efforts to rehabilitate the community under the program. He highlighted that, under the supervision of the governor and local officials, in coordination with the Wali of the Fes-Meknes region, the authorities have taken concrete steps to organize the relocation process. Each family was granted an initial compensation of 60,000 MAD, with the option to move to new locations such as Al-Buhayra or Zlilak.
The resident described this financial support as a positive start, noting that residents are now awaiting the completion of administrative procedures and the issuance of official documents to begin moving to their new homes. He expressed optimism, viewing this long-awaited development as a beacon of hope for families who have endured difficult conditions for decades.
Additionally, the resident emphasized the importance of removing slum housing to improve the urban landscape, especially as Morocco prepares to host major international sporting events like the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. These events necessitate improved infrastructure and enhanced urban aesthetics. He praised the efforts of local authorities, describing them as aligned with public expectations, and called for accelerating the process to facilitate a smooth transition for affected families.
In his closing remarks, the resident extended his heartfelt gratitude to King Mohammed VI for the developmental initiatives launched to improve citizens’ living standards across the Kingdom. He also commended the dedication and commitment of local authorities in ensuring the project’s success, acknowledging their role in meeting the needs of the community.
