During a press conference following the government council meeting on Thursday, January 16, 2025, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas provided updates on the ongoing revision of the Family Code. He emphasized the government’s strong commitment to this matter, underscoring its significance in weekly government deliberations.
Justice Minister presented a brief overview during the meeting, outlining key proposals for the Family Code revision. These proposals had been previously discussed in a communication session held under Royal directives.
Baitas announced the formation of a dedicated drafting committee comprising ministries directly involved in the revision process, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, as well as the General Secretariat of the Government. The committee will include legal, judicial, and religious scholars and remains open to expertise from other relevant fields.
He clarified that the proposals presented during the communication session constitute the primary substance of the revision and will be refined into precise legal texts, detailing implementation procedures and conditions. He noted that earlier debates surrounding the proposals were premature, as the legal texts are yet to be finalized.
The spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s adherence to the directives of His Majesty the King, emphasizing its commitment to engaging with the public and providing timely updates throughout the process.
Baitas highlighted the positive reception from political parties, unions, and civil society organizations, which have endorsed the government’s comprehensive approach to the revision. He also condemned attempts to undermine the Supreme Council of Ulema, emphasizing the importance of respecting the council’s constitutional role in issuing religious opinions.
This initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance social justice and protect individual and family rights in Morocco, aligning with constitutional principles and Royal guidance.
