In a political rally held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, in Fes during the open days event, Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and former Prime Minister, shared his views on his tenure as head of government. He addressed a range of political and social issues that had sparked significant debate during his time in office.
Benkirane began his speech by defending his performance during his leadership of the government from 2011 to 2016, emphasizing that Morocco experienced a positive political and social dynamic during that period, despite facing criticism from the opposition and certain media outlets. He highlighted that the Moroccan people trusted him twice, first in the 2011 elections and again in 2015, when his party won 125 parliamentary seats and 200 local councils.
In his speech, Benkirane stressed the importance of respecting scholars and public officials, expressing dissatisfaction with what he described as “inappropriate” criticisms directed at prominent figures, such as his party colleague, Idris Azami Al-Idrisi. He reiterated that political work should be based on ethics and respect for national expertise, free from attacks or insults.
He also responded to media voices he labeled as “paid” critics, claiming that the goal of these campaigns was to tarnish his political career. Benkirane added, “The mistakes I made during my time as Prime Minister are part of the job, but the Moroccan people were and still are with me, and that is what matters.”
Concluding his speech, Benkirane called on young people and politicians to approach national issues and public figures with responsibility and respect. He affirmed that the years he spent leading the government were filled with challenges, but they contributed to strengthening democracy and development in Morocco.
