Abdelilah Benkirane Criticizes Government Policies and Warns of Economic and Political Instability

In a press conference held on Thursday, December 19, Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party, addressed several pressing political and economic issues in Morocco. He began his speech by delivering sharp criticism of the current government, asserting that the policies of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch are damaging the country’s image and eroding trust between citizens and officials.

Benkirane emphasized that the monarchy is a cornerstone of the nation’s stability. However, he claimed that the actions of Akhannouch’s government undermine this stability. He noted that citizens are increasingly questioning the credibility of the government, especially when decisions like fuel price hikes appear to harm the public interest.

He also highlighted a ruling by the Competition Council, which fined Akhannouch 9 billion dirhams. Despite this, only 1.8 billion dirhams were reportedly paid, which Benkirane sees as a lack of seriousness in addressing economic corruption. He argued that such practices contradict the fundamental principles of justice and tarnish Morocco’s international reputation.

Benkirane further criticized the recent wage increases for civil servants, asserting that they do not address the root causes of Morocco’s economic challenges. He warned that such measures could drive both local and foreign investors away, stressing the importance of creating a stable and conducive environment for investment—a goal the current government seems to have failed to achieve.

He went on to accuse the government of being disorganized and incapable of effectively managing economic issues. He expressed concerns that the current policies have created a sense of economic insecurity among citizens.

Additionally, Benkirane denounced irregularities in public procurement support, pointing out that some contracts received undue government backing. He described these actions as serious violations, indicative of a “deep state” exerting control over many economic and political affairs.

In conclusion, Benkirane urged the government to tackle these challenges seriously, stating that it lacks the solutions needed to address the country’s current crises. He warned that if the situation persists, Morocco could face greater difficulties that would negatively impact its future.
