During a press conference held on December 19, 2024, Abdellah Bouanou, a parliamentary member of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), addressed several issues related to infrastructure development and conflicts of interest.
Bouanou highlighted concerns stemming from the recent parliamentary session dedicated to questioning the Prime Minister about infrastructure and its impact on economic growth. He criticized the government’s attempt to reduce monthly parliamentary sessions to once every two months, describing it as a breach of constitutional commitments. The PJD parliamentary team, according to Bouanou, focused its rebuttal on governmental strategies to enhance infrastructure, pointing to a significant gap between national investments and international benchmarks. This, he argued, revealed weaknesses in planning and strategic direction.
He accused the current government of claiming credit for major achievements that are the result of institutional progress over the past two decades under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, emphasizing that these accomplishments are not the work of the current administration.
Bouanou also raised suspicions of conflicts of interest in several projects, including renewable energy contracts, natural gas initiatives, and water desalination projects, notably the Casablanca desalination plant. He stated that the Prime Minister openly admitted his involvement in these projects, defending them as transparent and cost-efficient, despite widespread controversy.
The PJD member criticized the Prime Minister’s inappropriate manner of responding to parliamentary members, noting that his remarks often undermined the legislative institution and, in particular, female parliamentarians. Bouanou recalled previous statements by the Prime Minister, which he described as offensive and unbecoming of someone in his position.
In closing, Bouanou called on the government to clarify its positions and commit to transparency in managing national projects. He warned that conflicts of interest threaten public trust in political processes and advocated for a national debate on development and investment priorities, free from narrow political calculations.
