During a press conference held yesterday, Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and former Prime Minister, leveled harsh criticisms at the current Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch. He accused Akhannouch of creating a deep crisis of trust that threatens the credibility of the government and national institutions. Benkirane highlighted what he described as glaring contradictions in official statements concerning major investment projects, asserting that transparency is absent and that Moroccans deserve clarity and truth instead of false promises.
Benkirane specifically addressed the announcement of a 650 billion MAD investment, alleging that the figures conceal inaccuracies and lack clear objectives. He noted discrepancies between Akhannouch’s statements and official communiqués from the National Investment Commission, which Akhannouch chairs. Benkirane expressed astonishment at the lack of credibility and consistency in official discourse, describing it as “unbefitting the responsibilities of a Prime Minister.”
He questioned Akhannouch’s ability to face Parliament again after these inconsistencies, stating that a loss of trust in leaders undermines not just individuals but the institutions that form the backbone of state stability and progress. Trust, he emphasized, is the foundation upon which nations are built, citing historical examples to argue that strong leadership, not necessarily abundant resources, is key to building a robust state.
In his critique, Benkirane accused Akhannouch of using his position as a businessman to pursue personal interests at the expense of public welfare. He argued that the current government lacks the strategic vision needed for sustainable development, describing Akhannouch’s actions as “disasters” that erode public trust and exacerbate general discontent.
Benkirane concluded by asserting that the PJD does not seek to weaken the government for narrow political gains but aims to protect public interest and enhance institutional credibility. He emphasized that the Moroccan people deserve a government characterized by integrity and transparency, stressing the importance of restoring trust as a fundamental principle in public administration.
