Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has announced a project to construct a new power plant in Taounate province. The project has been awarded to a Japanese-Chinese consortium comprising China’s “CEEC” and Japan’s “Mitsubishi Power”.
The total investment for the project amounts to approximately 5.9 billion Moroccan dirhams. The scope of work includes the plant’s design, supply of necessary materials and equipment, as well as construction, testing, and operation. The contract also includes long-term maintenance for the first five years of the plant’s operation.
The new plant will consist of two gas turbine units, each with a production capacity of 450 megawatts. These turbines will operate in an open cycle and use natural gas as fuel.
This project comes as part of Morocco’s efforts to enhance its electrical power generation capabilities and meet the country’s growing demand for electricity. It also reflects international cooperation in major infrastructure projects, leveraging Japanese and Chinese expertise in this field.
The project is expected to improve electricity supply in the region and boost economic development in Taounate province and surrounding areas.
