In a significant move, France, one of the world’s great powers, has affirmed that the future of the Moroccan Sahara must be within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. This French position came during a statement by the French representative at the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which adopted a new resolution on October 10, 2024, renewing its support for the UN-led political process to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The French representative stated that “France’s latest decision to support Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara is in line with international law and respects the principles of national sovereignty and regional security enshrined in the United Nations Charter.” He added that this French position is in harmony with the American decision issued in 2020, which recognized the Moroccanness of the Sahara.
The French representative pointed out that “France, as it develops its position by affirming that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the sole framework for resolving the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, joins the many supporters of the Moroccanness of the Sahara who see this initiative as the only real and effective solution to end this regional conflict.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, in a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, affirmed that “the present and future of the Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” stressing that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework in which this issue must be resolved.”
France’s position is considered a historic step in the international community’s support for the Moroccanness of the Sahara, and it is added to the growing consensus that includes many European, Arab, African, and Asian countries.
