Wave of Stormy Weather Sweeps Southern and Southeastern Morocco”

Southern and southeastern regions of Morocco, along with the Atlas Mountains, have experienced a wave of stormy weather since last Friday. According to meteorological reports, this phenomenon is the result of an unstable tropical air mass, driven by an exceptional position of the tropical front in the southern regions of the country.

Causes of the phenomenon:

  1. Collision of humid tropical air masses from the south with cold air masses from the north
  2. Formation of unstable storm clouds
  3. Heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms
  4. Flash floods in several areas of the southeast and eastern Atlas

Weather monitoring stations recorded record amounts of rainfall in different areas. Here’s a table showing the most notable readings:

RegionRainfall Amount (mm)Time Period
Ouarzazate47Less than 3 hours (Friday)
Tagounite (Zagora)17024 hours (Saturday-Sunday)
M’hamid El Ghizlane9024 hours (Saturday-Sunday)
Ait Taous (Errachidia)76.424 hours (Saturday-Sunday)
Afla Ighir (Tiznit)8024 hours (Saturday-Sunday)

These heavy rains were accompanied by strong winds that stirred up dust in the eastern and southeastern regions and the Atlas highlands. Here are the highest recorded wind speeds:

  • Ouarzazate: 100 km/h
  • Errachidia: 81 km/h
  • Marrakech: 76 km/h
  • Midelt: 72 km/h
  • Nouaceur: 65 km/h

As a result of these exceptional weather conditions, some areas witnessed a unique visual phenomenon where the sky turned orange. Scientists explain this phenomenon as follows:

  • Scattering of light on dust particles suspended in the air
  • Particles blocking colors such as yellow, green, and blue
  • Only red and orange passing through, giving the sky its distinctive color

Weather forecast for the coming days:

  1. Today:
    • Continued unstable clouds with thundershowers in the Atlas regions and southeast
    • Partly cloudy weather on the central plains and eastern Rif with scattered showers
  2. Tomorrow (Monday):
    • Weakening of instability
    • Scattered rain and thundershowers in the southeast and southern parts of the eastern region
    • Rise in daytime temperatures
  3. Tuesday:
    • Local thundershowers in the southern Saharan provinces
    • Partly cloudy weather with light scattered rain in the southeast
    • Slight decrease in daytime temperatures

The relevant authorities urge citizens to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines during this period, especially in areas most affected by these exceptional weather conditions.
