Netanyahu Affirms Israel’s Readiness for Any Scenario Following Threats of Retaliation for Hezbollah and Hamas Leaders’ Assassinations

In a new development in the Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Thursday that Israel is at a “very high level” of preparedness for any scenario, whether defensive or offensive, following threats of retaliation for the assassination of senior leaders of Lebanese Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas.

Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office: “Israel is at a very high level of preparedness for any scenario, both defensive and offensive. We will impose a heavy price for any aggressive action against us.”

This statement comes after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah confirmed that Israel should expect an “inevitable response” following the assassination of the group’s military commander, Fouad Chokr, who was killed on Tuesday evening near Beirut in an Israeli airstrike.

The Israeli army had previously announced that it had “eliminated” Chokr, holding him responsible for the death of 12 young people killed on July 27 by a rocket fired at the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, which Hezbollah denied involvement in.

In a related context, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed on Wednesday to inflict “severe punishment” on Israel, accusing it of killing the head of Hamas’s political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in the Iranian capital on the same day. Israel refused to comment on this matter.

Netanyahu’s statements also come after Israel’s announcement earlier in the day of the “death” of Hamas military wing leader Mohammed Deif in a strike on the Gaza Strip on July 13, which Hamas denied.

Netanyahu added: “His elimination confirms a simple principle we have established: whoever attacks us, we attack in return.”

These developments indicate escalating tensions in the region, with the continued exchange of threats and attacks between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon and Palestine, raising fears of a wider confrontation in the near future.
