The Foreign Minister of the Libyan government, Abdul Hadi Al-Hawaij, affirmed Libya’s clear position on the Maghreb region, saying, “We are committed to the Arab Maghreb Union and its institutions and to activating the union that the founders began in 1958.”
Commenting on attempts to build a Maghreb space without Morocco, he said: “We are the legitimate government elected by the Libyan House of Representatives. We represent the will of Libyan society, but unfortunately there are international interventions in Libyan affairs.”
This came during the Libyan Foreign Minister’s speech during the symposium “The Future of Libya: Politically, Economically, and Human Rights,” organized by the Moroccan Association for Citizenship and Human Rights in Kenitra.
The spokesman explained that Libya wants to engage in building confidence between the Maghreb parties, considering this a policy of alignment. He stressed that Morocco is a neighbor and friend, as is the case with Algeria, and that resolving the crisis should not involve neglecting it or avoiding discussing it publicly.
Al-Hawaij stressed Libya’s readiness to contribute and play a role in activating the Arab Maghreb Union, stressing that Libya is committed to the union as an appropriate framework. He stressed that it is the historical, legal and foundational institution that everyone should rally around in order to build a strong and effective Maghreb Union.
