After a series of international/federal recognitions, Saint Kitts and Nevis announces its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative

Saint Kitts and Nevis Federation announced, the day before yesterday, Wednesday, its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the ‘sole serious, reliable, and realistic basis’ for resolving the manufactured conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

Support for development in the Sahara

The Saint Kitts and Nevis Federation also praised the socio-economic development underway in the Moroccan Sahara thanks to the efforts and investments of the Kingdom of Morocco, within the framework of the new development model for the southern provinces.

The joint statement mentioned that this new model has significantly empowered the population of these provinces and improved human development indicators in the region.

Enhancing bilateral relations

Saint Kitts and Nevis Federation, as a member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, also appreciated the opening of an embassy for the organization in Rabat on October 19, 2018, and a consulate in Dakhla on March 31, 2022.

Reaffirmation of support

On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce, Consumer Affairs, Economic Development, and Investment of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, reaffirmed his country’s steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the territorial integrity of the Kingdom during his visit to Rabat the day before yesterday.

Support for the political process

Douglas emphasized, in a statement to the press following his talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, the reiteration of his country’s support for the political process led by the United Nations aimed at reaching a fair and permanent settlement to this regional conflict, emphasizing the credibility, seriousness, and realism of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the ‘sole credible, serious, and realistic solution.’

Compatibility of the initiative with international law

A joint statement issued after these talks revealed that this Moroccan initiative fully complies with international law, the United Nations Charter, and resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

Significance of this recognition

Saint Kitts and Nevis’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and its support for the autonomy initiative marks a significant step in bolstering Morocco’s position on the international stage. This recognition comes after a series of international recognitions supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, including the recognition by the United States of America in December 2020.
