ولدت ثريا في فاس عام 1936. منذ صغرها ، كان لديها شغف بأي شيء يطير ، حساسة لأدنى صوت لطائرة تحلق فوق مدينة فاس.
اشتد هذا الشغف حتى حان الوقت لأخذ دروس في الطيران. مدرسة الطيران الوحيدة كان مقرها في تيط مليل في منطقة الدار البيضاء. كان من الصعب إلحاق فتاة مغربية بهذه المدرسة في ذلك الوقت ، حيث كانت مخصصة للقوات الفرنسية المتمركزة في المغرب ، لكن ثريا استطاعت أن تفعل ذلك بمساعدة والدها: عبد الواحد الشاوي ، الذي كان أول صحفي مغربي ناطق بالفرنسية.

Touria was born in Fez in 1936. From a young age, she had a passion for anything that flew, sensitive to the slightest sound of an airplane flying over the medina of Fez.
This passion intensified until it was time to take flying lessons. The only flight school was based in Tit Mellil in the region of Casablanca. It was difficult to put a young Moroccan girl in this school at that time, as it was reserved for the French forces stationed in Morocco, but Touria was able to do so with the help of her father: Abdelwahed Chaoui, who was one of the first Moroccan French-speaking journalists.
In 1952, Touria became the first Moroccan female pilot at the age of sixteen. Newspapers worldwide reported the event and King Mohammed V of Morocco received her at the Palace to congratulate her.
