Sefrou – Tensions have escalated within the Al-Manzel Municipal Council in Sefrou Province after several opposition members decided to withdraw from an extraordinary session, protesting what they described as the way several local issues are being managed and calling on the competent authorities to verify a number of claims they raised regarding the council’s performance during the current term.
According to the concerned members, the decision to withdraw came in response to their objections to the way decisions are being made within the council. They criticized what they considered the marginalization of the opposition’s role in discussing the issues on the agenda, arguing that some decisions are being passed without genuine discussion among the council’s various components.
Public Lighting at the Center of Criticism
One of the main issues raised by the opposition concerns the management of public lighting. Members spoke about the installation of new lights without, in their assessment, completing the necessary technical studies. They linked this to repeated failures involving electrical transformers and increased electricity consumption costs.
The opposition is calling for clarification of the technical criteria used to install the lights, as well as disclosure of the financial cost of the operation and its impact on electricity consumption.
Kiosks and the Use of Municipal Property
Opposition members also raised the issue of kiosks installed within the urban area, referring to structures they described as unauthorized and alleging that they were established without legal permits for individuals who, according to their claims, have links to the council presidency.
They called for verification of the legal status of these kiosks, the licensing and allocation procedures involved, and an audit of how municipal property and equipment are being used in activities they considered to have an electoral nature.
Urban Rehabilitation Program Suspended
The Al-Manzel Urban Rehabilitation Program was also at the center of the dispute, after opposition members expressed concern over its suspension and called for clarification regarding the reasons behind the delays and the status of the projects originally planned under the program.
Opposition members argued that the continued situation is affecting several local facilities and infrastructure, while also raising concerns over differences in access to rehabilitation projects between the city’s various neighborhoods.
Observers of local affairs in Al-Manzel believe that the issues behind the dispute go beyond political disagreements related to the management of the council, as they are directly connected to daily services and projects and facilities affecting residents. They believe that addressing the controversy requires moving these issues beyond mutual accusations toward documented explanations and official technical and financial data.
The opposition is calling for an investigation into the issues it has raised. However, these claims remain positions expressed by opposition members and do not constitute evidence of any violation, pending clarification from the Al-Manzel Municipal Council presidency and the relevant authorities.
