Morocco – Canada has announced a new position regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, describing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “a basis for a mutually agreed solution” to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
The position was expressed in a statement issued by the Global Affairs Canada following a phone call between Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Ottawa stated that it recognizes the “importance” of the Sahara issue for Morocco, while also referring to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 issued in October 2025.
According to the statement, Canada considers the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco to be “serious and credible,” while emphasizing the need to reach a lasting, fair, and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties involved.
This diplomatic development comes ahead of an expected visit by Anita Anand to Morocco in the coming weeks, a step expected to strengthen bilateral dialogue and expand discussions on several political and economic issues.
In the same context, recent days have also witnessed supportive European positions regarding the autonomy proposal. During a visit to Rabat, Kaja Kallas stated that “genuine autonomy could represent one of the most realistic solutions” to settling the dispute.
African support for Morocco has also continued, with the President of the National Assembly of Gabon reaffirming his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
Observers believe these developments reflect growing diplomatic momentum in favor of Morocco at the international level, particularly as an increasing number of countries view the autonomy initiative as a realistic and practical framework for resolving the conflict under United Nations supervision.
