Sports – The dispute surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal has entered a new phase of escalation after the Court of Arbitration for Sport set May 7, 2026, as the final deadline for the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to submit its defense memorandum in the highly controversial case.
This development follows the appeal filed by the Senegalese Football Federation against the decision issued by the Confederation of African Football on March 17, which awarded the championship title to the Moroccan national team with a 3-0 ruling by default.
According to circulating reports, the case is progressing rapidly within the corridors of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, while the Moroccan federation, led by Fouzi Lekjaa, insists it possesses what it describes as “strong and decisive” evidence, including official referees’ reports and video footage related to incidents that occurred during the final.
On the other hand, the Senegalese side reportedly requested an accelerated legal procedure in order to secure a final ruling before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the request was rejected by both Royal Moroccan Football Federation and Confederation of African Football, with both parties insisting on following the normal legal process to allow all sides sufficient time to prepare their legal submissions.
Observers expect the case to take between 9 and 12 months before a final verdict is issued, meaning that a resolution to one of the most controversial cases in African football could be delayed until the end of the current year.
The dispute continues to attract significant attention from African and international football fans due to the sensitivity of the final and the widespread controversy that surrounded it across the continent.
