Ifrane / Sefrou – Fes News
The provinces of Sefrou and Ifrane are strengthening their anti-hail protection systems through the installation of new ground-based generators, as part of broader efforts to enhance climate resilience and safeguard agricultural production—especially in light of increasingly frequent and intense hailstorms in recent years.
According to data from the provincial directorates of agriculture, ten anti-hail generators will be installed across several communes in Ifrane Province, including Tigrigra, Oued Ifrane, Ben Smim, Timahdite, Sidi El Makhfi, and Dayet Aoua, with an estimated cost of around 2.4 million dirhams.
In parallel, Sefrou Province will reinforce its existing system with the addition of five new generators, at a cost of approximately 1.26 million dirhams. This step aims to reduce the losses suffered by farmers, particularly in tree crop production chains.
This system—widely used internationally—relies on scientific techniques to reduce the size of hailstones by seeding clouds with condensation nuclei that stimulate the formation of smaller ice crystals, thereby lessening their impact when they fall.
These ground-based generators operate by burning a solution containing silver iodide using propane gas, producing smoke that interacts with cloud structures.
The equipment is designed with wind-resistant structures and systems that ensure efficient emission of nuclei, along with temperature control mechanisms to maintain optimal performance.
Additionally, these generators are equipped with solar power systems and remote communication technologies, enabling real-time monitoring and rapid activation, thus improving response efficiency to adverse weather events.
This project is part of ongoing national efforts to protect the agricultural sector from climate variability, enhance production sustainability, and ensure stable incomes for farmers.
