Nador: Spanish Guardia Civil Officer Arrested on Drug Trafficking Charges

Moroccan authorities arrested a member of the Spanish paramilitary Guardia Civil on Saturday afternoon at the Beni Ansar border crossing in Nador. The officer was caught in the act while attempting to smuggle approximately 30 kilograms of cannabis resin (chira) inside a vehicle registered in Spain.

According to sources close to the case, the drugs were carefully concealed inside the car driven by the suspect, who was on vacation in Morocco and preparing to return to the city of Melilla.

During a routine inspection at the border crossing, Moroccan security and customs services intercepted the vehicle and discovered the illicit cargo.

The Spanish national, confirmed to be an active member of the Guardia Civil, was placed in custody. The competent public prosecutor’s office in Nador ordered a judicial investigation under the supervision of the judicial police to determine the exact circumstances of the case and identify any potential accomplices or links.

This arrest deals a significant blow to cross-border trafficking networks and highlights the possible involvement of members of foreign security forces in smuggling activities, a concerning phenomenon amid Morocco’s intensified efforts to combat international drug trafficking networks.

In recent years, Morocco has increased record seizures of chira, reaffirming its commitment to cutting off illegal export routes to Europe.
