On Wednesday, the Rabat Primary Court issued its verdict convicting social activist Ibtissam Lachgar to two and a half years of imprisonment, along with a fine of approximately 50,000 dirhams, on charges of blasphemy due to writing a phrase considered offensive on her shirt.
Despite the defense’s request for her temporary release citing her critical health condition, the court rejected the request, raising concerns among lawyers and human rights activists about the health impact of enforcing the sentence while their client is suffering from cancer.
Naima Elkallaf, Ibtissam Lachgar’s lawyer, confirmed that her client is battling cancer and urgently requires surgery on her left hand to avoid amputation, emphasizing that imprisonment conditions could pose a serious risk to her health and life.
