Sefrou – In an unforgettable historical event, His Majesty the late King Mohammed V made an official visit to the city of Sefrou on September 30, 1950, just five days after the catastrophic flood that struck the city. This flood was caused by torrential and unprecedented rains that led the “Akay” wadi to burst its banks, with floodwaters rapidly engulfing the heart of the city.
The flood inflicted severe damage on the city, leaving dozens of victims, causing the collapse of dozens of homes, especially in the old districts like Al-Mellah and Al-Shabak. Markets and bridges were also damaged, and the landscape of many historical districts was drastically altered.
This disaster became an opportunity to embody national solidarity, as many Moroccan cities sent financial aid, provisions, and essential materials. Meanwhile, the tragedy received wide coverage from international press, which considered it one of the most violent floods that Morocco had witnessed in the 20th century.
The royal visit carried a strong message of support to the residents of Sefrou and marked a turning point toward serious consideration for rehabilitating the banks of the “Akay” wadi and deepening its riverbed to prevent the recurrence of such a tragedy in the future.
