Outrage in Fez: A vital street turns into a “dark corridor” threatening citizens’ safety

Allal Ben Abdallah Street, one of the main and vital arteries in the heart of the city of Fez, was plunged into complete darkness on Tuesday evening, sparking widespread outrage among citizens and road users and highlighting serious security and social risks. At approximately 8:48 PM, the thoroughfare experienced a total and comprehensive blackout of its public lighting, transforming a once-bustling area into a dark pass that evokes anxiety, in a scene that reflects a clear neglect in the maintenance of the city’s basic infrastructure.

Despite the strategic importance of the street, which witnesses heavy traffic and is crossed daily by hundreds of pedestrians, it was shrouded in near-total darkness. The only lights to pierce the gloom were the faint beams from the headlights of passing vehicles. This precarious situation exacerbated the dangers, turning the street into a fertile environment for traffic accidents. The safety of pedestrians, especially women and the elderly, was directly and immediately threatened, raising genuine fears among residents.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that public lighting was entirely absent, and the street was relying solely on the illumination from passing cars. This raises more than a few questions about the role of the municipal technical services and the responsibility of the concerned authorities in providing a basic service to citizens. The lack of periodic maintenance and renewal of the lighting infrastructure has become a central issue, with residents seeing this neglect as a dereliction of duty by these departments.

Amid this deteriorating situation, residents are clearly calling on the local authorities and the municipal council to intervene urgently and immediately to repair the malfunctions in the lighting system and ensure its continuous operation along this essential thoroughfare. Citizens stress that swift intervention has become a pressing necessity to avert any potential accidents or to deter any security threats that may arise from the continuation of this worrying situation, which now dominates one of the most important streets in the city of Fez.
