Public Space Clearance Campaign in Wadi Fes Neighborhood Sparks Debate Over Selective Enforcement

A recent security campaign aimed at clearing public spaces in the Wadi Fes neighborhood of the city of Fes targeted the demolition of illegal structures and walls erected by some residents and merchants on public property. This effort is part of ongoing measures by local authorities to enforce order and ensure respect for public spaces.

The campaign involved removing entrances and walls that marred the public appearance and restricted movement. However, local sources told “Fes News” that the enforcement appeared selective, noting that some areas of public property occupation in the Hadiqat Wadi Fes district remained untouched despite being in plain sight of the authorities. This raises questions about the criteria used to select targeted locations and the comprehensiveness of law enforcement.

The source emphasized the need to address the issue without discrimination or exceptions, calling on authorities to unify their standards and firmly apply the law to all citizens regardless of their background or location, in order to protect the public interest and ensure fairness.

This concern comes amid several clearance campaigns conducted by the authorities across Fes, including neighborhoods such as Al-Mustaqbal, Aqdal, and Marinine, where illegal public space encroachments were removed to reinforce public order, regulate urban spaces, and improve quality of life.

Past and ongoing experiences indicate challenges related to continuity and lack of follow-up measures to prevent the return of disorder, alongside residents’ calls for alternatives and solutions for those relying on public spaces for their livelihoods.

Until such campaigns continue and monitoring mechanisms are strengthened, the fundamental demand remains for the fair and comprehensive application of the law to ensure genuine and integrated public space management in Fes — creating an organized urban environment that serves all citizens without exception.
