The Polisario Front has denounced what it called “bargain-based positions” taken by some countries regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, claiming such stances lack “legal and moral legitimacy.”
In a statement issued by its General Secretariat, the separatist group sharply criticized France, accusing it of adopting a “shameful stance” by openly supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. The group went further, claiming that Paris is playing a “destabilizing role” and contributing to tensions in the region.
Spain was also targeted in the statement, with Polisario asserting that Madrid, which it described as the “administering power of the territory,” bears “historic, legal, and moral responsibility toward the Sahrawi people.” This is despite Spain having officially notified the United Nations on February 26, 1976, that it had relinquished all responsibilities in the territory and no longer considers itself involved in the issue.
In contrast, the Polisario adopted a more reserved tone toward the United States, calling on Washington to “return to a position of neutrality,” which, according to the group, would allow the U.S. to “play a constructive role in the decolonization process.” The group carefully avoided any mention of the recent U.S. Congressional bill proposing to designate Polisario as a terrorist organization.
Instead, the statement accused Morocco of “fabricating false allegations” against the group in an attempt to undermine what it refers to as “the legal status of the Sahrawi cause.”
This renewed rhetoric from Polisario comes as international support continues to grow for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, widely recognized by major global powers—including the United States, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands—as a serious, credible, and realistic solution to the decades-long dispute.
