Fes – Exclusive
Growing concern is spreading among the residents of Fes amid increasing talk of a real water crisis that could strike the scientific capital. This comes in light of the alarming decline in the water reserves of the dams supplying the city and consecutive years of drought that have directly impacted the region’s groundwater.
In this context, a senior official closely monitoring the water situation in the region told us in an exclusive statement that the current water situation is “critical and requires urgent measures,” warning that “the next few years do not bode well if the climatic conditions remain unchanged.”
The official explained that the continuous drop in the fill rate of the Idriss I Dam, the city’s main water source, coupled with increasing pressure on water resources due to urban expansion and agricultural demands, places the city before an existential challenge that requires collective efforts.
He added that local authorities and the Autonomous Water and Electricity Distribution Agency of Fes (RADEEF) are studying multiple scenarios to deal with the crisis, which may include rationing measures through scheduled temporary water cuts in some neighborhoods, as well as tightening controls on irresponsible water use, such as car washing and filling private swimming pools.
In light of this situation, voices are rising calling for the acceleration of planned water projects, such as seawater desalination and linking water basins, alongside urging citizens to adopt a spirit of responsibility and rationalize their consumption of this vital resource, whose availability is no longer guaranteed.
