Emmanuel Macron praises Morocco: A model to be followed in the development of the blue economy and sustainable ocean governance in Africa

At the opening of the “Africa for the Ocean” summit, hosted by the French city of Nice on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted Morocco’s leading role in developing the blue economy and promoting the protection of oceans at the African level.

The summit, chaired by Princess Lalla Hasnaa, representing the Kingdom of Morocco, discussed vital issues related to the sustainable development of oceans, environmental governance, and regional cooperation between the countries of the continent.

Macron expressed his appreciation for Morocco’s strong commitment to protecting oceans and combating pollution, especially plastic pollution, stressing that the Moroccan experience has become a benchmark at the continental level. He added: “Morocco presents a model to be followed in the management of marine resources, and its vision in this field constitutes an important step towards achieving a balance between sustainable exploitation and environmental preservation.”

The French President praised the message of Morocco to the participants in the summit, which was delivered by Princess Lalla Hasnaa, describing it as “a message with a clear vision” that highlights the Kingdom’s strategy in establishing sustainable ocean governance and promoting the balanced use of African marine resources.

Macron also highlighted the “Atlantic Initiative” launched by Morocco, which aims to enable landlocked countries to access the oceans, considering it evidence of Morocco’s deep understanding of the importance of promoting integration between African countries. He pointed out that this orientation is reflected in major infrastructure projects, such as the Tangier Med port, which is today ranked among the most prominent ports in the Mediterranean.

In the same context, the French President paused at the Dakhla Atlantic port project, which is expected to start work during the next year, describing it as “a strategic step that will enhance Africa’s ability to benefit better from the wealth of its oceans.”

Macron stressed that the “Africa for the Ocean” summit is not limited to being a traditional dialogue forum, but represents an embodiment of the growing cooperation between Morocco and France in pivotal areas such as sustainable development and environmental protection.

The summit, which brought together a group of leaders, officials, and experts, is concerned with promoting sustainable maritime governance, exploring innovative solutions to finance marine infrastructure projects capable of meeting future challenges, and working to develop effective partnerships between coastal and landlocked countries in Africa.
