In the framework of its monitoring and documentation missions, the Digital Content Observatory has recorded a serious cyberattack targeting a sensitive public institution in the Fez-Meknes region, which deals with strategic affairs directly related to the organization of public space.
This breach allowed the attacking party to gain control over the privileges of one of the internal official accounts, granting them full access to the content management system of the institution’s official website.
🔍 Initial technical data indicates that the hackers exploited this breach to publish thousands of extremely dangerous pages, including:
- Promotion of prohibited and dangerous materials, including drugs and banned medications;
- Explicit and morally objectionable pornographic content;
- Links and advertisements for suspicious global gambling and betting sites;
- Transforming the public website into a digital gateway to direct Moroccan visitors towards foreign networks of a criminal nature.
📛 The seriousness of this attack extends beyond the affected institution to national digital security, representing a threat to the credibility of official platforms and citizens’ trust in them, and exposing deep security vulnerabilities suffered by some public facilities, especially in the Fez-Meknes region, which is considered one of the strategic regions in the national administrative structure.
📢 Accordingly, the Digital Content Observatory:
- Demands an urgent national digital and security investigation under the supervision of the competent authorities to determine the source and circumstances of the breach;
- Calls for a comprehensive mobilization of all public institutions in the Fez-Meknes region to conduct a thorough and serious assessment of their digital security levels;
- Calls upon ministerial and administrative bodies to immediately review digital maintenance and hosting contracts and ensure strict periodic monitoring of their internal systems;
- Stresses the necessity for an official statement from the affected institution, clarifying what happened and the measures taken to address the situation.
🛡️ The Observatory reiterates that digital security has become an element of national sovereignty, and any leniency in this aspect could have dire consequences for state institutions and citizens alike.
