In an era where smartphones have become an essential part of the daily lives of millions of young Moroccans, TikTok continues to dominate as a leading platform for self-expression and content sharing. However, it has also become a battleground between creativity and nonsense, between meaningful content and digital noise, and between freedom of expression and the chaos of unchecked influence.
The Digital Content Observatory, which specializes in monitoring and analyzing trends in Morocco’s digital space, has expressed growing concern over the widespread popularity of shallow, non-educational content on TikTok. Some of this content, the Observatory notes, promotes symbolic violence, discriminatory language, or ridicule of cultural and social values. What’s even more alarming is that “nonsense” has become a profitable product, rewarded with views, likes, and online support.
Viral for the Wrong Reasons
The Observatory has recorded a noticeable increase in engagement with videos featuring dangerous challenges, offensive skits, or provocative material, compared to educational or cultural content that often struggles to gain traction.
While TikTok certainly offers opportunities for creativity and digital expression, the platform is also being misused to promote distorted models of digital success. Young users, especially teenagers, are being drawn into a world where empty performances and fabricated scandals are seen as shortcuts to fame and influence.
A Distorted Digital Role Model
The Observatory warns of the direct and indirect impact of such content on collective behavior, as it reinforces a distorted image of success based on sensationalism rather than substance. It raises concerns about the normalization of shallow or provocative behavior and its long-term effects on youth values.
A Call for a National Dialogue
In response, the Digital Content Observatory is calling for a nationwide dialogue on digital ethics, especially targeting influencers followed by an entire generation. It emphasizes the crucial role of educational and cultural institutions in guiding young people toward positive, creative uses of social platforms—content that reflects the true identity and values of Moroccan society.
The Observatory also highlights the importance of digital literacy for parents, equipping them with the tools to understand and guide their children’s online habits. As digital influence grows stronger by the day, empowering families and institutions to navigate this space wisely has become more important than ever.
