Road Transport Crisis Worsens: National Union Coordination Threatens Nationwide Strike and Warns the Government of Economic Collapse Due to Rising Prices

The National Coordination of Road Freight Transport Unions, which is affiliated with the four major trade unions, expressed deep concern about the continued deterioration of the sector and the worsening economic and social crisis for professionals. They hold the government responsible for what they described as “unpopular policies” that have led to this situation.

In a statement, the coordination criticized the failure of the historical decline in global fuel prices to reflect on local prices. They noted that the current price reductions are “marginal and do not reflect the reality of the market,” pointing to the existence of a “monopolistic structure” controlling the prices. They referenced previous reports by the Competition Council and called on it to assume its constitutional responsibility and take urgent action to combat monopolies and ensure genuine competition in the fuel market.

The coordination also condemned the passing of the regulatory law on the conditions for exercising the right to strike, describing it as “restrictive,” making the exercise of this right “almost impossible” in many cases. This came after the government ignored union proposals, warning of growing social unrest in the sector and the risk of an unprecedented economic and social crisis if the sector’s issues are not urgently addressed.

In the same context, the coordination criticized the absence of a clear government policy to implement the “sustainable transport” slogan, calling for real restructuring of the sector based on listening to the professionals’ problems and ensuring their representation. They rejected any legal provisions “professionally unacceptable” that could lead to the displacement of workers in the sector.

The coordination also called on the governor of the Casablanca-Settat region to implement the outcomes of the February 19, 2025 meeting as soon as possible. It also urged the relevant ministry to review the sector’s representation to ensure fair representation and address unresolved issues.

These actions come amid growing tensions between professionals and the government, with repeated calls for serious dialogue that prioritizes the sector’s issues, away from “occasional slogans,” according to the statement.
