Rachid Hamouni, head of the Progress and Socialism team in the House of Representatives, called for an urgent meeting of the Productive Sectors Committee in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, to discuss the real statistics and conditions of the national livestock herd, in light of conflicting data and high meat prices.
Hamouni emphasized that the figures circulating about the numbers of sheep, goats, cows and camels are often conflicting, which leads to confusion in agricultural planning and seriously affects the national economy and the social conditions of livestock farmers.
The parliamentarian pointed out that the National Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders is the main reference that provides the Ministry of Agriculture with statistics, on which the government bases its decisions related to public support for the sector, and stressed the need to clarify the government’s vision on this issue, especially in light of the increasing rise in meat prices, which is burdening citizens.
Hamouni demanded that the government provide the parliamentary committee with an accurate explanation of the measures taken to ensure the quality of the herd, including health safety and vaccination, feed prices, and ways to protect against diseases and climate change, and stressed the need to discuss the cost of production, marketing methods, and any illegal practices that contribute to the continued rise in prices.
In light of this situation, the parliamentarian called for the need to take urgent measures to curb speculation and ensure the stability of meat prices, in order to preserve the purchasing power of citizens and achieve food security in Morocco.
