The Tiznit-Dakhla highway, stretching 1,055 km, has been completed, linking the Souss-Massa region to the extreme south of Western Sahara. Finished in ten years at a cost of $1 billion, this project serves as a crucial asset for Morocco at the UN, bolstering the credibility of its autonomy plan for Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty.
Morocco stands out as the only country in Africa constructing ultra-modern and connected cities in the middle of the desert. The nation is building state-of-the-art infrastructure and developing green energy megaprojects, attracting the interest of major powers such as England, the USA, China, and France.
The highway project aims to enhance connectivity with key national production and distribution centers, reduce travel times, mitigate accident risks, and simplify freight transport. It also includes rest areas and truck parking to improve traveler comfort.
With an overall completion rate of 97%, significant portions of the highway are already operational. The project is expected to have a substantial impact on investments in the region, directly affecting 2.2 million inhabitants across ten provinces and contributing to the socio-economic growth of four regions: Souss-Massa, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab.
Mbarek Fencha, the central director of the project, emphasized that this strategic initiative aims to develop southern provinces and strengthen Morocco’s ties with its African hinterland. Despite facing natural and geopolitical challenges such as sandstorms and the COVID-19 pandemic, the project has progressed well.
The completion of this highway marks a significant milestone in Morocco’s infrastructure development efforts and reinforces its commitment to sustainable growth in the region.
