Minister of Equipment and Transport Discusses Progress on the Tichka Tunnel Project

During the oral questions session held in the House of Councillors on Tuesday, December 24, the Minister of Equipment and Transport provided updates on the highly anticipated Tichka Tunnel project, now referred to as the Ourika Tunnel. The project represents a strategic step toward enhancing connectivity between Morocco’s southern regions and the rest of the country.

The minister confirmed the completion of preliminary and geological studies, paving the way for detailed studies aimed at defining the gradient and accurately estimating project costs.

He also addressed the challenges faced by previously awarded companies, which led to the project’s delay and the cancellation of earlier contracts. The government has since initiated preparations for a new tender. The final project cost, estimated to range between 10 and 13 billion MAD, will be confirmed upon completion of the detailed studies to ensure adequate funding.

The minister highlighted that the tunnel will reduce travel time between regions by approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and improve road safety, particularly for heavy vehicles and trucks. Additionally, it is expected to boost economic and social development in neighboring areas, especially the Ouarzazate Province.

In conclusion, the minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to this strategic project, emphasizing that it aligns with royal directives and is part of a broader vision to expand the national road network and strengthen regional connectivity across Morocco.
