During a recent session, Minister of Communication and Digital Transformation Amel Al-Falah emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing an ambitious plan to enhance internet coverage in remote areas. She noted that addressing this challenge requires a combination of traditional infrastructure and modern technological innovations.
The minister outlined ongoing efforts centered on the National High and Very High Broadband Development Plan, aimed at extending internet services across the kingdom. She highlighted that the first phase of the plan, launched in 2018 and set to conclude in 2024, has already provided second, third, and fourth-generation telecommunication services to over 1,640 areas. Additionally, she announced the commencement of the plan’s second phase, targeting 1,800 additional underserved areas, with completion expected by 2026.
For regions where terrestrial networks face coverage challenges, the minister stated that the government has adopted the VSAT initiative, which leverages satellite technology to deliver internet services to rugged and hard-to-reach areas. These technological solutions, she added, represent a crucial step toward closing the digital divide and achieving technological equity across Morocco.
The minister stressed that providing internet access to rural and mountainous communities is not merely a technical endeavor but a strategic vision aimed at empowering citizens through education, healthcare, and remote work opportunities. She emphasized that this initiative contributes to sustainable development and ensures equal opportunities for residents of both urban centers and rural areas.
