Morocco’s Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal Falah, has unveiled the kingdom’s plans to launch the 5G network in conjunction with Morocco hosting the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. During a parliamentary session, the minister explained that the goal is to achieve 25% population coverage by 2026, increasing to 70% by 2030, with a focus on full coverage for cities hosting 2030 World Cup matches.
These plans are part of the “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy, which aims to transform the kingdom into a regional and international digital hub. The strategy also includes developing digital infrastructure, with the minister announcing plans to secure fiber optic internet service for 6,300 public administrative sites by 2026, and equip 5.6 million homes by 2030.
In a related context, Falah emphasized the importance of digital services in developing Morocco’s telecommunications sector, highlighting efforts to enhance telecommunications infrastructure. She noted that the government supports operators in this field through investment agreements, with investments exceeding 8.4 billion dirhams in 2023 to support national digital transformation projects.
It’s worth noting that through this strategy, Morocco aims to create 240,000 jobs in the digital sector by 2030, and increase digital sector exports from $1.5 billion in 2023 to nearly $4 billion by 2030. The strategy also aims to improve internet coverage in 1,800 rural areas, contributing to bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
These plans reflect Morocco’s ambition to become a leader in digital technology in the region, leveraging the hosting of major sporting events as a catalyst to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
