Abdeljebbar Rachdi Elected President of Istiqlal Party’s National Council

The Moroccan Istiqlal Party witnessed a significant development in its organizational structure on Saturday, as Abdeljebbar Rachdi was elected President of the party’s National Council during the first ordinary session held since the 18th National Congress.

Rachdi’s election came as a result of consensus between members of the party’s executive committee and other members of the National Council, with the majority of militants in the National Council of Morocco’s oldest party voting in his favor.

Rachdi, who was recently appointed Secretary of State to the Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family in charge of Social Integration, succeeds Chiba Maelainin as head of the “parliament” of Allal El Fassi’s party. He competed for this position against Abdessamad Kayouh, the new Minister of Transport and Logistics, as well as Rahal El-Makaoui and Hassan Abdelkhaleq.

With this election, the Istiqlal Party has completed the formation of its institutions after re-electing its Secretary-General Nizar Baraka for a second term at the end of April 2024 by unanimous vote. In his speech after his re-election, Baraka committed to building a “better future” for the party.

This development comes at a time when the Moroccan political landscape is witnessing important transformations, as the Istiqlal Party, one of the long-established conservative parties in Morocco, seeks to strengthen its position and renew its leadership in the face of political, economic, and social challenges facing the country.

It is worth noting that these developments come in the context of the party’s continued important role in the Moroccan political arena, where it participates in the current government and seeks to present its vision for development and reform in the kingdom.
