Palestinian Film “Happy Holidays” Wins Grand Prix at Marrakech International Film Festival

“Happy Holidays,” directed by Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti, has been awarded the Grand Prix “Etoile d’Or” (Golden Star) at the 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, held under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI.

The international jury, presided over by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, announced their decision during the closing ceremony held on Saturday evening, December 7, 2024, at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech. The Grand Prix comes with a monetary award of 50,000 US dollars, to be shared between the director and the producer.

The festival’s official competition featured 14 films from around the world, addressing a variety of themes ranging from social and political issues to environmental concerns.

In addition to the Grand Prix, the jury awarded the Best Director prize to Damien Couture for his film “Under the Volcano.” The Jury Prize was shared equally between “The Hut” by director Silvina Schnicer and “The Village Next to Paradise” by director Mo Harawi. The Best Performance award went to Manar Shahab and Wafa Aoun for their roles in “Happy Holidays.”

The Marrakech International Film Festival is considered one of the most prominent cinematic events in Morocco and the region, aiming to encourage cinematic creativity and promote cultural dialogue through the seventh art.
