During a plenary session of the House of Representatives on December 2, 2024, MP Rim Chabat expressed her firm opposition to the draft strike law proposed by the government, warning of its detrimental impact on workers’ rights in Morocco. She described the draft law as a severe setback for labor rights.
In her remarks, Chabat emphasized the need for an inclusive legislative approach that involves all stakeholders. She criticized the government for excluding large segments of society from discussions on laws affecting their daily lives, particularly this draft law, which she called “an affront to the people and the nation.”
Chabat argued that the proposed law endangers workers’ and citizens’ rights, referring to some provisions that allow for replacing striking workers with new ones. She labeled this as a violation of the constitutional right to strike, warning that such measures could foster a repressive environment and discrimination against workers striving for better conditions.
The MP also expressed disappointment over what she described as a significant regression in government policies toward the working class. She accused the government of shifting the burden onto workers instead of addressing pressing issues such as inflation and unemployment. “Unfortunately, this government has taken us backward, as though we were in a servitude era, expecting workers to labor in silence,” she stated.
Chabat concluded her address by calling for a reconsideration of the draft law, cautioning that the mounting pressures on citizens due to rising living costs could exacerbate Morocco’s social and political challenges.
