On Thursday, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired a broad meeting in Rabat with stakeholders in agricultural production chains, where a comprehensive action plan was presented to revitalize the agricultural sector and ensure market supply in anticipation of the 2024-2025 farming season.
This meeting comes amidst significant challenges faced by the sector due to five consecutive years of severe drought, which has notably affected agricultural production across various fields.
The discussions focused on measures aimed at lowering agricultural product prices, protecting and restructuring livestock, and enhancing the sector’s capacity to cope with the adverse effects of climate change and water scarcity.
Emphasis was also placed on supporting vital production chains, such as dairy, red meat, and poultry, in addition to crop production like olives, citrus fruits, and dates, with an estimated budget of MAD 7.3 billion.
Akhannouch affirmed that the government will continue to provide necessary support to agricultural professionals to improve productivity and enhance sector performance, noting that significant investments directed at the sector will remain ongoing under royal directives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector’s resilience to climate change.
The government also stressed that it will monitor the implementation of urgent measures designed to maintain price stability and ensure a continuous supply of national markets, thereby boosting citizens’ purchasing power.
It is worth mentioning that in May 2023, the government signed several contracts to develop agricultural production chains as part of the “Green Generation” strategy, with a total budget exceeding MAD 110 billion, including MAD 42 billion contributed by the state through the Agricultural Development Fund.
